Task 1 learning aim: Sound Editing
The reason for editing digital sound files is to compress or summarise a recording to fit a specific space for example music or radio stations. Also this process to eliminate flawed, repetitive, uninteresting and irrelevant material. In editing a digital sound file we use a process called the “Audio Creation Process”, in this process you first come up with an idea of the product then record the product by using the primary and secondary sound sources. An example of a primary source could be a recording of someone clicking their fingers whereas a secondary source could be going onto the internet and finding the recordings from there. Then the next process is to file and listen back then edit the file and look out for any errors as mentioned before. Then from there the product will now produced. The editing stage is the second to last process we do in order to produce this product .
Ethical editing is when you make it suitable for the audience. The reason as to why this is important is because this is needs to appeal to everyone in terms of being friendly and not being offensive to some viewers making this comfortable for viewers to listen to the radio and enjoy it and to not get offended about anything. Another reason why ethical editing is so important is that if you do not check that you are telling any lies during while doing the radio, it can make the listeners uninterested to listen to it again when they don’t know if this is even genuine enough to listen to.Ethical editing in factual content, even if the need to reduce the running time of a clip is pressing, whereas in a fictional product, there is more flexibility with time, even if the overall running time is fixed, the need to ensure that a short scene is tightly timed is not as critical as with factual material.E.g. the running time of a sound bite for a story in a news bulletin, taken from politician’s response when they answer a question and may have very limited run time but it is important for meaning the not be changed if the producer is to retain their reputation.
Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. Although you have freedom of expression, you also have a duty to behave responsibly and to respect other people’s rights. An authority may be allowed to restrict your freedom of expression if, for example, views that encourage racial or religious hatred. Limiting free expression usually involves restrictions on publication, penalties for publication, requiring journalists to reveal their sources, imposing disciplinary measures or confiscating material. Article 10 may be limited in certain circumstances. Any limitation must:
you would you know if the content is factual is by that you could tell that the person is not pretending and they will give you true facts and information. And it is based on factual stories focused on actual events and people. Another reason you would know if the content is factual or not for example is a documentary, they will state what the documentary is about and how you would know if the content is factual is that they will have presenters on it. Another reason how would you know if the content is factual is that if there is a chronological order of what is happening. A reason how you would know if the content is factual is it will always be shown and presented just before or after the news and this could take place in the morning, afternoon or evening.
The reason for editing factual content is to understand the nature of sound for factual content and the need to reproduce sound material without changing any aspect of the original source, this is because the audience will be confused if anything on the content is true. The reason for editing factual content is ethical editing of its factual material to retain the essential intended meaning of the spoken word, this is because they need to make sure their content is pure facts and nothing said that will offend them. also the news is high statues genre because of the political, economic and international news. in the 6 o clock news the is a use of dramatic sound stings just before the news presenter is about to speak and this is a repeated 30 minute bulletin. there is sometimes a split screen between the broadcaster and the presenter and the there is an emphasises on live news and immediacy. another factual
A type of fictional content is Soap for example Eastenders, Hollyoaks, Coronation Street and Emmerdale. With Soaps, they don’t have an ending they just carry on, they write on a week by week, month by month basis, soaps reflect what’s going on in the news. Another type of fictional content is series and examples of these would be Strangers Things, On My block and Top Boy. Series always have seasons, they have a set of characters, they set the plot and it takes its own narrative. The last type of fictional content is movies and examples of these are IT, Black Panthers and Avengers Endgame. With movies, they have a set of characters, they set the plot and it last up to 2 – 3 hours straight.
How you would know if the content is fictional is when the content refers to a plot, setting and characters that has been created from the imagination, which they contain things that are not real. Another reason you would know if the content is fictional is they have actors and narrators in it. A reason you would know if the content is fictional is fictional content it would be presented early in the morning, during the day or even late at night. The last reason you would know if the content is fictional is that it will have a title of what it is.
A reason why fictional content should be edited is to alternative new sounds to create a new world/ a new fantasy, for example, Jurassic World, they created sounds of a dinosaurs of what they think they would sound like. Another reason why fictional content should be edited is to make the audience
believe it, again with Jurassic World and the dinosaurs, they used that sound make the audience believe that they sounded like that.
An example of the 6 o clock news is What journalist as their job is to find something new and they try and undercover the truth and their intentions. When editing, journalist listen back to check the sound levels if it has risen. Sometimes journalists need to edit to see if they have asked enough questions or to see if their information and facts are true. When editing, journalists edit to time constraints. Also journalists edit to see if they have met their intentions. To edit journalists may need to take away irrelevant content. Some may also need to cover personal identities. When post editing legal checks need to be may such as if the journalist has made misrepresentations in their information and factual content.
For fictional editing process creative ideas and intentions and this could be from the director, the script writer, producer or the personal project. The pre edits is when the journalists can listen back and check sound levels. This process can also mean that they might have to retake some parts. Sometimes they can use different recording software to get different sounds but they have to follow the creative process and intentions. When editing decisions will be based on creative processes and intentions. This means sometimes the journalists will have to go back to the client and ask if that's what they want. When post editing it must meet freedom of speech. Are you are not persecuting a person or a group of people. Or deliberately being rude to someone in an aesthetic way ( funny). And this must meet the clients brief.
