In this essay, I will be explaining pre-production processes for digital media products, specifically music videos. Pre-production is everything that takes place before the filming day. For example: budget, mise-en-scene, extras, lyrics etc.
Finance is either private, public or joint. Most artists would choose private to make a video they personally like, whereas public would be something to an audience, normally with a meaning such as don’t drink and drive.
Logistics is everything that physically needed to sort out, like how people are getting to the place, the weather, camerawork etc. Adhering to codes of practice would be making sure everything is done legally – such as health and safety and permission to be on site.
Regulations are rules that all film companies and production houses must abide by, such as: you can’t work for them without a contract.
Each pre-production task has a purpose, function and a format. The formats of pre-production are the documentation of planning, e.g. scripts, storyboards, risk assessments, lyrics. These should be industry standards, so people who don’t know each other on the team would allow them to work together easily. These formats should be acted on by everyone. They allow you to be responsible and prove you have done something. The function of pre-production is to produce the highest quality product you can. Visualising something can help us to work out if an idea is good and safe, and if it can be done financially. This is in order for the video to be organised and why we should follow these rules. It should make sense according to the artist’s ideas, and establish feasibility. The purpose of a pre-production is whether it is legal or not, if the artist is insured, what happens if there is a mistake etc.
Logistics is when everything that needs to be sorted out physically. The different types of logistics are deadlines, availability of equipment, availability of personnel and timescales. You can use deadlines for e.g., when making a music video, you would have to make sure that the deadlines are set properly, this is because if not it would take a long time to be completed or the person completing the deadlines might forget about it. How you would use availability of equipment is for example, when making a music video, you need to make sure that all the camera equipment is available to be used and is so it should be available and rented the reason behind is that there wouldn’t be equipment to help record the music video. For availability of personnel, before making a music video there are certain things that need to be done such as making deals/phone calls with people of certain extras actors, contributors, technical crew extras and etc, this is to help the sort out the important things in the video and help what kind of things that need to be included and this also makes the recording for the music video a lot easier.
Adherence to codes and practice of regulation is to make sure that everything is legal. A type of adherence to codes and practice of regulation is Mechanical – Copyright Protection Society. They also need to do a risk assessment of the area where want it to be filmed, so that they can make sure is a place where that no – one can get injured
and if so they would be nurses to help make sure they are safe and healing from their incident. And there has to be a healthy and safety team to tell the risks that could happen during the shoot. If there is no health and safety team everyone could be in a lot of danger as they are unaware of the consequences/risks of what could happen. With regulations, overarching rules that films copy and films companies need to obeyed as you can’t work for them without a contract, rules on how to do things safely, fairly and legal.
The purpose of pre-productions is that instructions need to be followed, this is because, for example, if you let people come to film on a random day, with no instructions and nothing being organised, the video is not going to be good quality and it wouldn’t make sense. The function of pre-production is to produce the highest quality video within the legal financial restraints, this means for example, when there is a budget set, making sure that nothing is spend over the limit but has to spent on things that are legal. The formats of pre-productions are documents that help to plan for something as this example is a music video. An example of formats of pre-production is storyboards, script, schedule, order listings, risk assessments, shop lists, budget and contract.
A documentation/formats is risk assessment, this set on a format which would be on a word document. The reason of a risk assessment is because they need list stating the things that could go wrong during the filming and what needs to happen to prevent it, so that everyone would be safe. As an example, for the OK GO music video, they used a professional pilot to fly the plane as it would as there is less chances of everyone getting hurt. A type of documentation/formats of pre-production is schedule, this is because it needs be on documentation where you can plan out all the different things that need to be done be for the music it video. For example, you need schedule to know when the release date of the music video would be released so that when making the music vide you would know how long you would have left before editing and filming everything. A type of documentation/formats of pre-production is prop lists, this is because it needs of what props are going to be used and how they are going to be used in the music video so that when it comes to filming the it makes it easier for the audience when they listen and watch so that they would be able to understand the meaning behind the video. Another type of documentation/formats of pre-production is storyboard as this would be drawn out then using a format to make the storyboard in a digital way. The reason for a storyboard is to the know in detail what is going to happen in each part of the music video and what is the meaning behind each scene this will also help the audience to understand the music video. The last type of documentation/formats of pre-production is shot lists, this could be use as a rough sketch/draft then turned into a digital format. The reason shot lists are used for pre-production is to visually see what each shot would look like in the music video.
Case Study 1 Music Video or Other digital media product
Case study is the music video of the song called “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar. In the music video, the scenes that where set where, a cathedral, a black room, a hair salon, neighbourhood (tiny planet), the house and skate park. The cost of Kendrick Lamar music video is over $5K as he had to pay for camera equipment/editing as in one point in the video he made everything like a tiny planet. Then he has to pay for props, costumes and settings/locations. How I would describe this music video is meaningful, truthful, realistic and powerful.
The purpose of the pre-production for the music video is that, it is to make sure everything is set to film for the music video, so that they won’t be no mistakes or last-minute ideas re-arrangements. An example is using the deadlines to use to notify that when everything that needs to be sorted out before releasing the video. The formats of the pre – production for the music video is that they have to do for example is shot lists, this is they need to know what type of shots are going to be used while of filming, so that while making video it will make sense to the audience of what the meaning means and it would be easier since it would be organized. As for example, the Cathedral scene, they needed to shot lists to know what it would look and what would happen in it. If there were no shot lists used in the process of making this music video, it would be very had as there is no guidance on to creating the shot. The function for the pre-production for the music video is that, for example, storyboards have been used to make sure if the idea they have for the video is a bad idea, if its safe or legal to do. An example of why storyboard is useful as in the fish tank scene (example, picture above), it would have to be permission before filming in the area as it could be seen as trespassing as there was no contract being signed to be using it as someone owns this site and could sue the company for not asking for permission, a lot of money could have been lost if the storyboard wasn’t used.
Think music video and talk about what would happened if it doesn’t happen
The type of documentation/formats of pre-production for finance is budget. How it would be use is on Excel (format) plan and make sure how much you have spent, how much you need to save, how money you have left and what did you spend your money on. What would be in the budget is each cost for each location, for example, the skate park area as they don’t own the location to be filming in, then 3D planet shot as that cost would be $5K to get that effect, camera equipment and then the props. This is to make sure that everything that is needed for the music video has been purchased. The type of documentation/formats of pre-production for logistics is deadlines. How it would be use on a Word document, this is to it clear music video needs to be done at a set date so that while making the music it would be long time making it. You could also to make sure when the props are going to be delivered so that it could be used for the music video as 9it would be difficult to film without. The type of documentation/formats of pre-production for material is shop list. How it would be used is a Word document as we need to know what sort of material that need to be used to help make certain costume need to be made as an example, Pope costume for the Cathedral scene as certain type of materials and jewels that need to added to the costume. This is important as if the shop list was used it would be difficult to bring the whole scene together and it would make audience understand. The type of documentation/formats of pre-production for legal is contracts. The contract would be a printed piece of paper to help sign to make sure that the media production company that is making the music video don’t break any rules, making sure everything they do is legal and legally assured of and entitled to pay by the contracting parties. For example, making you don’t go to any illegal sites, if the site/area is not paid for it could be likely to fine and money could lost/wasted.

I believe that pre-production has been carried out well of my digital media product, this is because by using the storyboards/shots lists it made the narrative of the story relatable and interesting and also having a strong link to the imagery being displayed. This had interest to the audience as each part of the music video there was always a new shot making it more unique and stand out to other music videos. why wanted to show that in his music video ad the meaning behind the message of that scene.
In conclusion the in the ok go ok go video the positive aspects of this were that nobody was injured and the risk assessments were good such as the company, it was cheaper and was practised well. Because of the pre production it was managed well and was scheduled correctly however the story boarding and the lyrics did not link together and this video did not win any awards also there were 53 minor injuries such as people throwing up however this did not effect the video. The positive aspects of the humble video for Kendrick Lamar the positive aspects of the video are that 3D planet world camera was expensive this cost up to £25,000 when this could’ve been done on Photoshop. Because of pre production the narratives work together and the glitching at the end were good. Also the camera moves but the everyone stayed stationary. There was a lot of ambiguity
